Southern Oaks Alpacas Suri Alpaca Farm - About Us
Meander through winding country roads in sunny Brooksville, FL, and you just might come upon a unique and hidden treasure: Southern Oaks Alpacas. Bordered by secure, safe fencing and shaded by sprawling ancient live oaks peppered with Spanish moss, Southern Oaks Alpacas farm is home to some of the finest suri alpacas in the region.
Looking upon the meticulously-cared-for 16 acre farm provides a treat for the eyes: beautiful alpacas ranging in hues from white to fawn to black – all grazing contentedly in sun dappled pastures. Built exclusively for our suri alpacas, each generous enclosure is home to groups of similar age, sex, and breeding status. Fleecy crias romp around at play while our herd sires look on from their own abundant spaces. Nearby enclosures house breeding females who munch on hay before napping in the shady breeze of one of our many oak trees. Nutritious feed and free choice minerals are provided to all of our animals, contributing to healthy, active, and happy Southern Oaks alpacas.
We (owners Rod and Belinda Chapnick) live onsite and treat both the farm and our home with the same conscientious standards of care – standards which carry over to the healthy, thriving alpacas who also call this their home. We have taken care to provide secure, well-ventilated shelters in each pasture for the shade and comfort of our suris, knowing that the health and well being of the animals is of the highest priority. Daily attention and care of all animals is only part of the successful formula. The alpacas thrive in a highly social environment, with pastures that closely parallel each other and are separated by wide runs for easy, stress-free handling and separation.
Florida heat is no deterrent to our suris’ happiness -- abundant shade from various shelters and cedar barns offer fresh drinking water and billowing breezes from numerous industrial sized fans, helping to cool our suris during the warmer months of the year. Carefully timed shearing schedules also ensure collaboration with the unique climate, giving the animals maximum comfort during the summer and protection during the cooler months of winter.
