Alpaca Neonatal 2 day Clinic
with Dr. Patrick Long

Join us for this HANDS ON CLINIC. It is an essential course for every breeder. Learn reproductive physiology, pregnancy diagnosis, normal birthing process vs. problem deliveries, cria assessment procedures, post-partum dam care and nutrition. Course includes lab with hands-on delivery practice and learning.

The objective of this course is to help you determine what role YOU play in the alpaca birthing process and give YOU more confidence in assisting with a difficult birth if necessary.

This neonatal seminar will be tailored to the needs of the attendees depending on knowledge levels; therefore, topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Learn reproductive physiology
  • Difficult births - Are you dealing with a dystocia?
  • Common dystocias & how to correct them.
  • Pregnancy diagnosis - progesterone tests & ultrasound
  • Post-partum care of the dam & cria.
  • Care of the cria - what is normal and how to deal with "at risk" crias
  • Preparation for birthing
  • What is normal birthing?
  • Birth Defects

About Dr. Long:

Patrick Long, DVM is a practicing veterinarian in Corvallis, Oregon. Llamas and alpacas comprise more than half of his practice. He graduated from Kansas State University with his DVM degree in 1976.  After 5 years in the US Army, he has since practiced in Oregon, working with llamas and alpacas since 1982.  He has spoken at many national and international meetings on llama and alpaca care.  Dr. Long is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Oregon Veterinary Association, the Willamette Valley Llama Foundation and he is a board member of the Alpaca Research Foundation and the Morris Animal Foundation.  He is co-author of the Llama and Alpaca Neonatal Care book. Dr. Long has written many articles for Alpacas Magazine and has participated in several importation screenings for ARI.  Dr Long’s areas of interest are herd health management, nutrition, and reproduction.

Fee: $375 per person or $700 for two people from the same farm.
A $100 deposit will hold your spot, balance due 10/1/08.
